Thanaka on Two artwork

An ancient Burmese beauty balm called “thanaka,” made from the pulverized bark of a local tree, is unique to Myanmar. Young and old daily paint these golden shapes, mostly circles and squares, on the cheeks and forehead, and dots and lines wherever they take a fancy. Patterned longyis and brown cheeks painted in these golden shapes are the one common thing cross-culturally throughout Myanmar.
